Down-Up LASIK™ Eye Surgery

Shortly after PRK was approved in 1995, the laser began to be used in a different way than it was originally intended.

Instead of reshaping the surface of the cornea (PRK), a thin layer of the cornea is first lifted and then the Excimer Laser is applied to the surface under that layer to eliminate the pain that often followed PRK and to return sight almost immediately. Most people can drive the next day (20/40 vision or better).

LASIK eye surgery is the state-of-the-art procedure in this field, preferred over PRK. However until the innovation of "Down-Up" LASIK, there had been one glaring shortcoming of routine LASIK. The instrument used to lift the layer was based on old instrumentation and could add risk to the procedure. All that has changed with the introduction of Down-Up LASIK™ eye surgery in New Jersey and New York by Dr. Joseph Dello Russo.

Down-up LASIK™ combines a high tech device to raise that layer (IntraLase®). Down-Up LASIK™ eye surgery was first pioneered in the New Jersey / New York region by Dr. Joseph Dello Russo.

Why is Down-up LASIK™ eye surgery better?

The new device has many safety features that the present one does not have. It creates the layer on the cornea from a different direction. The layer is lifted from the lower (down) position upward, therefore it is called "Down-Up".

After treatment, what does this do?

  • After treatment, the layer is kept in its "natural" position by the blinking of the eye.
  • Safer
  • Quicker return of vision
  • More comfortable
  • Can be used on farsighted people (side to side)

Before having routine (old "sideways" technology) LASIK, consider having Down-Up LASIK™ eye surgery at the New Jersey Eye Center. At the present time very few surgeons can offer "Down-up" LASIK because they lack the IntraLase® technology. Contact our eye surgery center in Bergenfield today to learn more about this exciting technology, or to schedule a consultation.
