History of Laser Surgery and LASIK

Doctor Joe Dello Russo has been involved with the Excimer laser technology since 1988, shortly after, the first prototype of the Excimer laser was created and tested.

In 1991 the national clinical studies for the Excimer laser began and lasted until 1996. Laser eye surgeon Joe Dello Russo’s New Jersey Eye Center was the most prominent of the 10 VISX Excimer laser centers during this time period. More laser treatments were performed here than in any other laser center in the clinical trials in the nation with the VISX Laser.

In 1996 the FDA acted on the data submitted, in part by laser eye surgeon Joe Dello Russo, M.D. and the New Jersey Eye Center, and approved the laser. In 1997 the New Jersey Eye Center obtained approval to conduct unique clinical trials to be centered at the New Jersey Eye Center which would test and treat patients whose prescriptions had not been approved by the FDA, that is, higher degrees of nearsightedness and astigmatism and farsightedness.

In conclusion, it would appear that practically any prescription for which a person wears contact lenses and/or glasses for distance is probably treatable by LASIK doctor Joe Dello Russo at his New York and New Jersey locations. The New Jersey Eye Center is very proud of the role it has played over the last 12 years in helping to develop, implement and test the VISX Excimer Laser.
