PRK (Photo Refractive Keratectomy)

At Dello Russo Laser Vision Centers in New Jersey and New York, Joe Dello Russo, M.D. and Jeff Dello Russo, M.D. reserve PRK for laser vision correction patients who are not good candidates for LASIK. The first laser vision correction surgery, PRK was introduced in 1990 by Dr. Joseph Dello Russo and a few other surgeons selected by the FDA to research the procedure, which received approval in 1996 based in large part on the work of the Dello Russo Laser Vision Centers.

PRK with Jeff Dello Russo, M.D. and Joe Dello Russo, M.D.

PRK is often an appropriate treatment choice for individuals who are not eligible for LASIK due to thin corneas. During your initial consultation with Joe Dello Russo, M.D. or Jeff Dello Russo, M.D., your corneal thickness will be examined to determine which option will be most successful for you.

During the PRK procedure, the cornea is reshaped directly, so there is no need to create a corneal flap. After surface cells from the cornea are cleaned away, the flying spot laser (Alcon LadarVision®) is applied directly to the cornea. The process takes approximately 10 – 60 seconds per eye. Afterwards, a chemical will be briefly applied to the eye, followed by bandage contact lenses, which are worn for several days to aid in healing. Although PRK patients typically experience a longer recovery period than LASIK patients, the vision correction results are exactly the same.
